Trip to Cajun Country!

So a couple of weeks ago I took a trip to Lake Charles, LA to drop
off some very important paperwork for mom and Mark.

All. By. My. Onesies.

Now, if you don't know me...I hate going anywhere alone. I'm a wuss
and I don't care who knows it. :)

Since I was All.By.My.Onesies. I had to find a way to fill the time
before the lawyers were done with the paperwork so that I could go back home.

Yay for standstill traffic on the way there.

So I'm not really sure how this came about but there is a giant Jesus in
a cemetery right off the freeway. He is around 23' tall and is at the center
of this cemetery that holds (I believe) some of the first settlers of the Lake Charles area.

What was really weird was that this cemetery was overgrown and forgotten
right next to the freeway but as soon as you stepped foot into the grounds...everything
went quite. It was really weird and comforting. You felt like you were transported
back in time where there was no freeway...just fields and swampland.

And then I remembered I was in Louisiana and I had forgotten to lock my car
and the moment was broken so that I could go make sure my vehicle was still there.

btw...yes...that does say Bilbo Cemetery.

Right off the freeway, right next to the tourism building-thing
was a really cool feature. A 'gator viewing area!!!!

As it was a Tuesday, I was there All.By.My.Onesies. and it was pretty cool!
I didn't have to worry about the hubby getting bored or what was on
the itinerary. It was a completely different feeling for me.

So I took about a million pictures.

He is hard to see but the gator head is right in front of
the left side of the tree trunk.

I had lunch at "Sabine Pass Crab Shack" since I kept hearing about
it on the radio on my drive into town. I was expecting true cajun cuisine...
I was disappointed.

While their food was yummy, I could have ordered it in Houston
at our local "fried fish" shack. There was nothing remotely "authentic" about
this restaurant. It wasn't terrible, it just wasn't what I wanted.

In the tourism booklet I saw that Lake Charles has a September 11th
memorial containing pieces of the pentagon and the twin towers.

Being a history buff I had to go check it out.

I was surprised at how this memorial affected me.

September 11th happened when I was in high school. I remember hearing
that something horrifying had happened while I was in gym class and the
coach was sitting next to a radio with the volume turned low.

I feel that this did a great disservice to us. The teachers were told
to carry on as usual so as to not startle us. I believe this is the right thing
to do...for middle school and elementary level children.

We had smart phones...with the internet.

So what ended up happening was some kids figured out what was going
on and told everyone else but by the time you play the telephone game
through a high school...the information is all warped. So we were left knowing
that something horrible had happened but we couldn't go to our teachers (who we
were supposed to trust) to talk about this life-changing moment.

Regardless, this monument is, I feel, one of the best 9/11 monuments.

Lake Charles lost two of it's citizens in the 9/11 attacks. Once the rubble
was cleared they received three pieces. One panel of the pentagon wall, and
two steel beams from the twin towers.

By the pentagon panel there is this plaque of Mayor Giuliani's speech.

And beyond that plaque are the twisted beams from the twin towers,
set in the exact proportion as the towers. That middle walkway is so you
can walk to these beams and touch history. You can touch a piece of the moment
that changed all of our lives.

To me, this memorial is what I needed. No exclusivity, no walls, no secrets,
no looking from afar in confusion, just a chance
to finally touch and feel a piece of that day that was kept from us.

At the base of the beams there are small holes (that are a part of the
manufacturing process) where people put flowers and flags in remembrance.

The colored glass on the wall surrounding the memorial is a representation
of all the lives lost on that day. There is one piece of glass per life lost, over 3,000
pieces of glass collected by the local elementary schools.

After visiting the memorial I drove around, looking at the gorgeous
houses on the waterfront and bemoaned the fact that I didn't find out about the
bayou nature trail earlier. I got the call that the lawyers were done with the
paperwork and I was outta there!

This is how excited I was to leave.

aaaaannnd then there was standstill traffic. Again.

But this time there was at least something to look at! A fire!

Half the state of Texas was on fire at the time...I wont lie...
I was kind of excited to see this little one so that I could one day say
to my grandchildren that I saw the fires when Texas was going up
in flames. :)

I'm big on stuff like that.

InstaFriday!

It's my first official InstaFriday Post!

:)

Nothing too exciting this week, just my little ghost cat and
the new Houston Dynamo Stadium (soccer) being built.

Oh, and a friendly little game of putt-putt between Barry and I.

Insta-Friday...on Monday.

It's official. I'm abandoning my 230 project. There are multiple reasons
(I'm not taking photos everyday and the photos I take are with my iPhone,
not my camera) but mostly I'm not improving upon my camera skills and
since I'm grumpy about taking photos you guys are not getting the fun filled
photos that I intended to share with you so I've decided to do a different series:
Insta-Friday!!!

It is a spin off of The Pleated Poppy's Instagram Friday. So you guys are still
able to see photos from my life but you wont have to scan through the photos
of my boring days lol.

And I realize it's monday but I couldn't wait until Friday to do my first post.

:D

I had to make a special trip to Louisiana on Wednesday to drop off
some papers for mom and Mark. It was my first trip that I did all by my
onesies! There was no one to meet me and spend the day with me
and I had to amuse myself. :)

I. Freaking. ADORE. This photo!!!!

I actually had a chance to work on set! We were doing a shoot for
Boys and Girls Country which is a wonderful program for children who
have no where to go.

Happy Monday!

230 Project: Week 16

Day 107 - Monday 8/29

I made a sale! Unfortunately while looking at the
description for the item I realized that I had  described
the fiber content incorrectly so I felt compelled to make the
customer an additional coffee cup sleeve with the correct fiber. :)

Day 108

I made this shawl for my friend Jeff "Howie" Howison
who is battling a form of gastro-intestinal cancer.
It is made in Friendswood, Tx city/school colors.

Day 109

I've been having a serious pain in my left shoulder
so I decided to get a massage (yay Groupon!) and
he told me I had a calcified muscle which he dealt
with and while I hurt for four days afterward,
he fixed it!!!!

btw...this isn't me. I wasn't going to take a pic of me
getting a massage :)

Day 110

Day 110: Sooo...I got into a car accident. :) I'm fine,
the truck is totaled and it wasn't my fault! I had a total
of four impacts and I walked away without a scratch.
We fully intend to buy another suburban because if I had
been in a little car I would be totally screwed. I'll pay extra
for gas to get that kind of safety. If you're curious about who
started the accident, it would be that big black truck in the middle of
the photo. Yeah.

Day 111: Barry came home!! Finally! We were busy talking about
our time away from each other and just generally catching up.

Day 112: Barry is home. There is no photo. :D

Day 113

It's the tamale man!!! Every time we're in Friendswood we stop.

I'm drooling just thinking about them.

Things I Love Thursday: Blogger iPhone App!

I'm going to cheat. This shall be a short post.

I love...

that I can now blog from my phone!!!!

Which is what I'm doing RIGHT THE NOW!!!

How exciting!!!

230 Project - Week 15

Day 100!!!!!!! Monday, August 22nd.

I can't begin to tell you how awesome it was to see this advertisement
at GAP. If you look closely, you will see that the puppy used is a Pit Bull!

How wonderfully awesome is that!

Even more awesome is that this pit is not portraying the usual
tough guy persona, it's being fun!

:D

Day 101

I did a little remodel on my bathroom.
I had originally had this green/beige/blue striped theme
going on but it seemed like it was too much.

I hate this blue tile but I decided to go white with everything so
that it creates a calmer atmosphere - almost spa like.

Day 102

No. I'm not obsessed with pitts. Not at all.
:D

You have no idea how hard it is to find Pit Bull related paraphernalia!

It's even harder to find HAPPY pitt stuff!

Day 103

I've been working hard on making soap satchels.
Now I just have to list them!

Day 104

To anybody who thinks they need to buy an expensive
photobox from ebay...look upon this creation.

I had all the materials on hand and this ugly photobox has
served me well!!!

Someday I will want to create a prettier version of this, but not now.

Day 105

Lazy photo day! I literally worked in bed while watching Rome.
Day 106

Best. Investment. EVER!

I call it Vera. ;)

Firefly! Anybody? Anybody? lol
I'm such a nerd.

230 Project - Week 14

Day 93: Monday 8/15
I finally listed a baby blanket!!

Day 94

Not only did I list a baby blanket this week but I also
added a new product: Beer bottle cozies! It's ca-razy!

And...this one just happens to be Texans football inspired. :)

Day 95

I'll admit it...while Barry has been gone I have been having
a torrid affair with my local redbox.

;D

Day 96
Day 97

Isn't she cute? When she's quiet.

This event requires two photos.

A pigeon flew in my car.

I can't make this up!!!

I was driving under an underpass with my window cracked about
six inches and a pigeon dive bombed my car, came into the cab where
it proceeded to FREAK OUT right in front of me while I was driving
and then dive into the back seat where it apparently knocked itself out.

I pulled over and just as I was about to check it's wings to make sure it
wasn't injured, it popped up and flew around my suburban until it landed on
this window. I figured it was ok and after I had taken these pictures (because
I knew that NOBODY would believe me if I didn't) I rolled the window down
and out it flew like it hadn't just scared the ever-living crap out of me.

Day 99

FOOTBALL SEASON HAS RETURNED!!!!!!

eeee!!!!

230 Project - Week 13

Day 86: Monday August 8, 2011

Day 87:

Another shawl I made for my mom. :)

Day 88:

We went to visit my dream kitchen from Ikea.

Day 89:

Kayden's Bday Party!

Day 90:

Apparently, according to the guy who was going to level our
house, there is a lake under the house that is caused by our
A/C condensation. Old A/C unit = TONS of condensation (aka - water)
that has to drain and instead of it draining into the plumbing
like new houses, ours just drains to the outside then it runs underneath
the house causing a freaking lake.

SO! I had to put a bucket under the pipe and empty it every
hour or so until we could run a hose from the pipe to my front yard.

Once the lake under my house dries up I'll be able to get the
house level.

Meanwhile my floors are all jacked up and some of
the doors in my house don't close. Grr!

Day 91:

Lily!

Day 92:

Apparently (apparently I just love that word) if you search
"soap sock" on Etsy my items come up in the top results!
Yay!

230 Project - Week 12

It really does seem like I am forever a week behind
on these photos. :)

Day 79: Monday August 1, 2011

I've started selling some yarn on Etsy. I've
bought a few lot sets of yarn off of Ebay and there
always seems to be a few yarns in the lots that
I have no intention of using and so I've added
a Destash/Supplies section to my Etsy shop.

Day 80:

This is a custom order I've completed that was
an absolute nightmare. The customer requested this
set of colors, should be no problem, right?

WRONG!

Apparently, Bernat Yarns makes new colors every season...
the problem is that you cannot buy last season's colors
from them. At all. Not online, not in stores, no-wheres!!!!

Luckily I had juuuust enough yarn left over from a
previous order to make this set of washcloths.

Day 81:

Hi. My name is Maria and I'm addicted to buying
school supplies.

I've decided to go through my extensive stash and donate
all the supplies that I have yet to use. I will keep one (and
only one!) of each item and then donate the rest.

I've had these colored pencils and crayons since I was
in high school. Yeah.

Day 82:

Ee! So excited!

This is my newly designed soap satchel!

I finally learned how to crochet in the round and I've
added these nifty little cinchers that take care of
the whole knot tying fiasco.

I love these cinchers! They're fairly cheap and make it
so much easier to scrub yourself! Now you
don't have to worry about your knot coming loose while
you're scrubbing! I love it!

See item here: Light Mint Green Crochet Soap Saver

Day 83:

It seems like I've been working on this shawl for forever!

I love this deep plum color!

Day 84:

I went shopping with Mom and we stopped at a Ross
and I saw these lovely shoes.

It took me 24 years but I have finally discovered my
inner shoe lover. :)

They were super cheap (like $15) and they
are amazingly comfortable. I usually don't go for
peep toe heels since they tend to pinch my feet, but
that is probably because I always buy shoes with a 4+" heel.
These heels are a bit lower but that is okie-day with me!

Day 85:

Mom's birthday! I intended to get a pic of the cake
but never got to it. This ICanHasCheezeburger will have to
do. :)
